Switzerland secured their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a disciplined and clinical 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday night in Vancouver, ending the North Africans’ hopes of progressing in the tournament.

Goals at the start of each half from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye proved decisive as the Swiss combined defensive solidity with ruthless finishing to overcome a determined Algerian side.

Algeria began the encounter brightly and looked the more energetic team during the opening exchanges, pressing high and forcing Switzerland onto the back foot. However, despite their promising start, Les Verts were unable to convert their early pressure into clear-cut chances.

Instead, it was Switzerland who struck first in the 10th minute through a moment of individual brilliance.

Young midfielder Johan Manzambi showcased his exceptional talent with a dazzling run down the flank, gliding past Aïssa Mandi before delivering a dangerous low cross into the six-yard box. Breel Embolo timed his run perfectly and calmly swept the ball home to hand the Swiss an early 1-0 lead.

The goal shifted the momentum firmly in Switzerland’s favour, while Algeria struggled to rediscover the attacking rhythm they had shown in the opening minutes.

Farès Chaïbi attempted to pull his side level before halftime with an effort from distance, but Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel dealt comfortably with the attempt as Switzerland carried their slender advantage into the break.

Any hopes of an Algerian comeback were dealt a major blow immediately after the restart.

Just a minute into the second half, Rafik Belghali’s attempted clearance fell kindly to Dan Ndoye inside the penalty area. The Nottingham Forest forward controlled the ball brilliantly before firing a powerful effort beyond Luca Zidane to double Switzerland’s lead.

Trailing by two goals, Algeria pushed forward in search of a way back into the contest. Substitute Anis Hadj Moussa injected fresh energy into the attack and produced a few encouraging moments, but the Swiss defence remained organised and composed throughout.

Switzerland expertly managed the remainder of the game, restricting Algeria to few meaningful opportunities while continuing to threaten on the counterattack.

The final whistle confirmed a deserved 2-0 victory for the Swiss, who advance to the Round of 16 after another mature and efficient performance.

For Algeria, the defeat brings an end to their World Cup campaign despite flashes of quality throughout the tournament. Switzerland, meanwhile, will remain in Vancouver as they prepare for a Round of 16 showdown against the winner of the clash between Ghana and Colombia, with a place in the quarter-finals on the line.
