Portugal booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Gonçalo Ramos scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to secure a thrilling 2-1 victory over Croatia on Thursday evening in Toronto, Canada.

The AC Milan striker emerged as Portugal’s hero after coming off the bench to head home the decisive goal in the 94th minute, sealing a hard-fought victory and setting up a mouthwatering Iberian derby against Spain in the next round.

Portugal enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges and looked the more threatening side throughout a tightly contested first half. Roberto Martínez’s men controlled possession and searched patiently for an opening, but Croatia’s disciplined defence stood firm to ensure both teams went into the break deadlocked.

The contest burst into life after halftime.

Croatia struck first in the 54th minute when veteran winger Ivan Perišić found space inside the penalty area before drilling a low finish beyond the Portuguese goalkeeper to hand his side a crucial 1-0 lead.

The goal forced Portugal to increase the intensity of their attack, and their persistence eventually paid off.

Just over 10 minutes later, Renato Veiga was brought down inside the penalty area while challenging for a corner kick. Following a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot.

Cristiano Ronaldo stepped forward and calmly converted the penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to level the scores at 1-1. The strike also marked the Portuguese captain’s first-ever goal in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup.

With the match finely balanced, both sides pushed desperately for a winner in an end-to-end finale.

Portugal finally found the breakthrough deep into stoppage time.

In the 94th minute, Rafael Leão delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, where substitute Gonçalo Ramos rose highest to power a perfectly placed header beyond Dominik Livaković, sparking wild celebrations among the Portuguese players and supporters.

Croatia thought they had rescued the contest moments later when the ball found the back of the net in stoppage time, but their celebrations were cut short after a VAR review ruled the goal out for offside.

The final whistle confirmed Portugal’s dramatic victory, ending Croatia’s World Cup campaign in heartbreaking fashion while extending the Seleção’s quest for a first FIFA World Cup title.

Portugal will now turn their attention to one of the standout fixtures of the Round of 16 as they prepare to face neighbours Spain in a blockbuster Iberian derby on Monday, 6 July, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
