Egypt continued their remarkable 2026 FIFA World Cup journey on Friday, defeating Australia in a dramatic penalty shootout after a hard-fought 1-1 draw following extra time to secure a historic place in the Round of 16.

The Pharaohs displayed resilience, composure and determination throughout a fiercely contested encounter before holding their nerve from the penalty spot to claim another memorable victory and keep Africa’s hopes alive on football’s biggest stage.

Australia made an energetic start and almost stunned Egypt inside the opening five minutes. Cristian Volpato unleashed a thunderous strike from long range after receiving a well-worked pass, but his effort crashed against the crossbar, much to Egypt’s relief.

The North Africans gradually settled into the contest and made their early dominance count in the 13th minute.

Karim Hafez delivered an excellent cross into the penalty area, where Emam Ashour timed his run perfectly before guiding a composed finish into the bottom-left corner to hand Egypt a deserved 1-0 lead.

Egypt controlled much of the first half and carried their advantage into the interval, looking confident as they searched for a place in the next round.

The Pharaohs almost doubled their lead moments after the restart when Mostafa Ziko threaded a clever through ball into Omar Marmoush inside the penalty area. However, the forward could only drag his effort narrowly wide of the far post.

Australia found their equaliser in the 55th minute under fortunate circumstances.

A dangerous free-kick into the penalty area caused confusion inside Egypt’s defence, and Mohamed Hany inadvertently headed the ball into his own net while attempting to clear the danger, bringing the Socceroos level at 1-1.

The match grew increasingly tense as both teams searched for a decisive breakthrough.

Egypt came closest during the closing stages of normal time when Rami Rabia twice rose highest to meet dangerous deliveries into the box. On both occasions, Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach produced outstanding reflex saves to keep his side in the contest.

Extra time delivered even more drama.

Mohamed Salah had a golden opportunity to restore Egypt’s lead after being brilliantly released by Omar Marmoush, but the Liverpool forward lifted his effort over the crossbar with only the goalkeeper to beat.

With neither side able to find a winner after 120 minutes, the match was decided by a penalty shootout.

Egypt made the perfect start when Australia’s Harry Souttar blazed his opening penalty over the crossbar before Mahmoud Saber confidently converted to give the Pharaohs an early advantage.

Jackson Irvine and Awer Mabil successfully converted Australia’s next two penalties, but Rami Rabia and captain Mohamed Salah responded with calm finishes to keep Egypt in control.

Australia’s hopes faded further when Lucas Herrington failed to convert his spot kick, leaving Hossam Abdelmaguid with the opportunity to seal victory.

The Egyptian defender kept his composure, calmly dispatching the decisive penalty to spark jubilant celebrations among the Pharaohs players and supporters.

The historic triumph sends Egypt into the Round of 16, where they will face reigning world champions Argentina after the South Americans edged Cape Verde in an epic extra-time contest.

With confidence growing and history continuing to be made, Egypt will now prepare for one of the biggest matches in the nation’s football history as they aim to extend their unforgettable World Cup journey.
