Cape Verde etched their name into FIFA World Cup history on Saturday morning as the tournament debutants secured a place in the Round of 32 following a hard-fought goalless draw against Saudi Arabia in their final Group H fixture.

The Blue Sharks entered the decisive encounter knowing that victory would guarantee qualification, but a disciplined defensive display and a valuable point ultimately proved enough after Spain defeated Uruguay in the group’s other match, confirming Cape Verde’s progression as runners-up.

Despite the high stakes, Cape Verde showed little sign of nerves and were the brighter side for much of the contest, creating the better opportunities against a Saudi Arabian team that struggled to break down their resilient defence.

The African side nearly made the breakthrough in the 22nd minute when Willy Semedo created space just outside the penalty area before unleashing a powerful low drive. However, Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais produced an excellent save to deny the winger and keep the scores level.

Saudi Arabia responded before the halftime break and came close through Mohamed Kanno, whose well-directed header appeared destined for the top corner. Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, however, was equal to the task, producing a superb save to preserve the deadlock heading into the interval.

Cape Verde returned for the second half with renewed purpose and continued to threaten. Jamiro Monteiro forced another smart stop from Al Owais after being played through with an incisive pass, while Kevin Lenini came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock with a thunderous long-range effort that flashed inches wide of the upright.

As the clock ticked down, Saudi Arabia pushed forward in search of a winner that could have dramatically altered the group standings. Their best opportunity arrived deep into stoppage time when Abdullah Al Hamdan found space inside the box, but his tame effort was comfortably collected by the ever-reliable Vozinha.

The final whistle signalled an anxious wait for the Cape Verde players and supporters, with qualification depending on the outcome of the other Group H encounter. Moments later, celebrations erupted as Spain’s victory over Uruguay confirmed Cape Verde’s place in the knockout rounds, completing one of the most remarkable stories of the tournament.

Spain finished top of Group H with seven points, while Cape Verde claimed second place to become one of the surprise packages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

For the tournament newcomers, qualification for the Round of 32 marks a historic milestone and a memorable achievement in their maiden World Cup appearance, as the Blue Sharks continue to capture the imagination of football fans around the world with their inspiring underdog journey.
