Manchester City climbed to the summit of the Premier League after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Burnley FC at Turf Moor, a result that also confirmed the Clarets’ relegation to the EFL Championship.

The decisive moment came early in the encounter when Erling Haaland found the back of the net just five minutes into the game. His clinical finish proved enough to secure all three points and propel City above Arsenal FC ending the Gunners’ remarkable 200-day stay at the top of the table, albeit only on goals scored.

Despite dominating proceedings, Pep Guardiola’s side were unable to extend their lead. City registered an impressive 28 attempts on goal but were repeatedly denied, with both Haaland and Rayan Cherki striking the woodwork on a frustrating night in front of goal.

While City controlled much of the contest, Burnley had moments of promise but failed to truly test Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal. Their inability to capitalize on opportunities ultimately sealed their fate, as relegation was confirmed following a difficult campaign.

The result also extended Burnley’s winless home run in the league to 13 matches, underlining their struggles throughout the season and marking their third relegation in the last three top-flight campaigns.

Although Arsenal have the chance to reclaim top spot when they face Newcastle United on Saturday, City who have now lost just once in their last 21 league outings hold the advantage for now. Attention will soon shift to the FA Cup, where Guardiola’s men are set for a semi-final clash against Southampton FC.
