Harry Kane has been crowned the winner of the 2026 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first English footballer to claim the prestigious individual award since Michael Owen in 2001.

The Bayern Munich striker beat Real Madrid and France forward Kylian Mbappé, who finished second, and Barcelona’s Spanish sensation Lamine Yamal, who came third, to take home football’s most coveted individual prize at a ceremony in London.

The 33-year-old becomes the fifth Englishman to win the award, joining an illustrious list featuring Stanley Matthews, who won the inaugural award in 1956, Bobby Charlton in 1966, and Kevin Keegan, who claimed the honour in consecutive years in 1978 and 1979.

Kane’s triumph also makes him the first Bayern Munich player to win the Ballon d’Or since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981.

Speaking after receiving the award, Kane reflected on his remarkable journey from a young striker who faced doubts about his potential to becoming one of the world’s most celebrated footballers.

“Not many people would have thought it, and maybe even I wouldn’t have thought I’d be this far,” Kane told DAZN.

The England captain admitted that his career had been shaped by numerous challenges, particularly during his early years, when he was not widely regarded as a future global superstar.

He explained that perseverance, hard work and self-belief had been crucial to his development, helping him overcome difficult periods and continue improving throughout his career.

England manager Thomas Tuchel welcomed Kane’s achievement, describing himself as delighted by the striker’s success and hailing the award as a huge honour.

Prince William also praised the former Tottenham Hotspur forward, describing him as a brilliant captain and a remarkable player.

Record-Breaking Season Seals Kane’s Triumph

Kane’s Ballon d’Or victory follows an extraordinary 2025-26 campaign in which he produced outstanding numbers for Bayern Munich and England.

The prolific striker scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern across all competitions, setting a new single-season scoring record for the German giants.

His remarkable club form, combined with his contributions to the England national team, took his overall tally to 73 goals and eight assists in 65 appearances.

Kane’s 61 goals for Bayern were 19 more than those recorded by any other player at a club in Europe’s top five leagues during the campaign.

His exploits placed him among the most prolific goalscorers in football history, with only a handful of players having registered comparable figures in a single season.

At Bundesliga level, Kane finished as the leading scorer with 36 goals, a remarkable 17 ahead of his nearest challenger.

He also scored 14 goals in the Champions League, despite Bayern’s elimination in the semi-finals, and contributed 10 goals in the German Cup, including a hat-trick in the final against Stuttgart.

He added another goal in the German Super Cup to complete an outstanding domestic and European campaign.

The England captain’s 12 international goals during the season, including six at the World Cup, further strengthened his claim to the Ballon d’Or.

Only Lionel Messi’s extraordinary total of 82 goals for Barcelona and Argentina in the 2011-12 season surpasses Kane’s overall tally among the historical comparisons cited in the report.

Other legendary goalscorers who have recorded exceptional single-season totals include Gerd Müller, Cristiano Ronaldo, Brazilian Ronaldo, Erling Haaland and Luis Suárez.

Trophies and Individual Brilliance

Although Kane’s season did not include winning the Champions League or the World Cup, his individual performances proved decisive in the Ballon d’Or race.

The striker helped Bayern secure the German domestic double, adding to the Bundesliga title he won the previous season.

Those achievements significantly increased his career trophy collection after years of personal success without major team honours.

However, it was his extraordinary goalscoring consistency and influence in attack that distinguished him from his rivals.

Kane’s previous best finish in the Ballon d’Or rankings was 10th, making his rise to the summit an especially significant milestone in his career.

Former England striker Alan Shearer had backed Kane for the award, pointing to his exceptional performances for both Bayern Munich and the national team.

Shearer described the striker’s numbers over the previous 12 to 18 months as sensational and argued that his performances made him a deserving winner.

Former England international Danny Murphy also praised Kane’s consistency, describing his goalscoring form as relentless and brilliant.

Murphy highlighted the striker’s successful adaptation to life at Bayern Munich and his standing among the world’s leading centre-forwards.

England Celebrates Historic Achievement

Kane’s triumph sparked celebrations in England, with the iconic Wembley Stadium arches illuminated in gold on Monday night to mark the occasion.

The award represents a landmark moment for English football, ending a 25-year wait since Owen became the last Englishman to win the Ballon d’Or.

It also reinforces Kane’s status as one of the leading figures of his generation, having combined prolific goalscoring with leadership for club and country.

For Bayern Munich, the award provides further recognition of the striker’s extraordinary contribution since joining the club.

For Kane personally, it represents the culmination of years of determination, resilience and consistent improvement.

After overcoming doubts early in his career and establishing himself among Europe’s elite forwards, the England captain has finally reached the pinnacle of individual football recognition.
