The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a hefty fine of $415,000 on the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) following a series of incidents that marred the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.

The highly charged final, held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, was thrown into controversy when Senegal’s Teranga Lions walked off the pitch for about 17 minutes in protest against a penalty awarded to host nation Morocco. Tensions ran high as players, officials, and supporters reacted angrily to the decision, leading to significant disruptions during the showpiece event.

Calm was eventually restored after Senegal captain Sadio Mané intervened, persuading his teammates to return to the field and allow the match to continue.

Senegal went on to secure victory after extra time, clinching the AFCON title.

Midfielder Pape Gueye emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal after Brahim Díaz missed the crucial penalty

for Morocco.

Following a comprehensive review of the incidents surrounding the final, CAF’s Disciplinary Committee found the Moroccan FA guilty of multiple breaches of conduct and imposed sanctions accordingly.

According to CAF, the fines include:

$200,000 for the inappropriate behaviour of stadium ball boys during the match

$100,000 for misconduct by Morocco’s players and technical staff, who reportedly invaded the VAR review area and obstructed the referee’s duties

$100,000 fine relating to the conduct of Moroccan player Ismail Saibari

$15,000 for the use of laser pointers by Moroccan supporters during the final

In an official statement, CAF said:

“To fine the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) USD 200,000 for the inappropriate behaviour of the stadium’s ball boys during the aforementioned match.”

CAF further added:

“To fine the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) USD 100,000 for the improper conduct of their National Team players and technical staff, who invaded the VAR review area and obstructed the referee’s work, in violation of the principles of fair play and integrity, as stated in Articles 82 and 83 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.”

The continental body also confirmed:

“To fine the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) USD 15,000 for the use of lasers by its supporters during the aforementioned match.”

The combined sanctions bring the total penalty to $415,000, underscoring CAF’s stance on maintaining discipline, fairness, and integrity during its competitions.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Moroccan Football Federation is preparing to lodge an appeal against CAF’s ruling in the coming days, as it seeks a review of the disciplinary measures handed down after the dramatic AFCON final.
