England booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after producing a resilient display to defeat tournament co-hosts Mexico 3-2 in a thrilling Round of 16 encounter at the iconic Estadio Azteca.
The Three Lions overcame a hostile atmosphere, high altitude and more than 35 minutes with ten men to eliminate the hosts in one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament.
Jude Bellingham starred with a superb first-half brace, while captain Harry Kane converted the decisive penalty after the break. Mexico responded through Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez, but England’s determined defending ensured they held on for a famous victory.
Backed by a passionate home crowd, Mexico began brightly and looked dangerous in the opening stages. However, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford came to England’s rescue with two excellent saves to keep the scores level.
England gradually settled into the contest and struck decisively in the 36th minute.
Declan Rice surged forward from midfield before releasing Bukayo Saka down the right flank. The Arsenal winger delivered a perfectly floated cross to the far post, where Jude Bellingham powered a diving header beyond Raúl Rangel to give England the lead.
The Three Lions doubled their advantage almost immediately.
Just ninety seconds after the restart, Gilberto Mora was dispossessed in midfield and England launched another swift attack. Harry Kane unselfishly squared the ball across the box instead of shooting himself, allowing Bellingham to bundle home from close range and make it 2-0.
Mexico refused to surrender and found a lifeline before halftime.
A dangerous free-kick from Roberto Alvarado caused problems inside the England penalty area, and after Ezri Konsa failed to clear convincingly, Julián Quiñones reacted quickest to fire home from close range and reduce the deficit to 2-1.
The match took another dramatic turn shortly after the restart.
England defender Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card in the 54th minute after a VAR review deemed his high challenge worthy of dismissal, leaving the Three Lions to play the remainder of the contest with ten men.
Despite being a man down, England restored their two-goal cushion minutes later.
Anthony Gordon raced onto a through ball before being brought down by goalkeeper Raúl Rangel inside the penalty area. Referee Alireza Faghani pointed immediately to the spot, and Harry Kane calmly dispatched the resulting penalty to make it 3-1.
Mexico continued to press and were awarded a penalty of their own after Kane accidentally caught Brian Gutiérrez while attempting to clear the ball.
Raúl Jiménez stepped up and confidently converted from the spot, bringing El Tri back within one goal and setting up a tense finale.
With the numerical advantage, Mexico threw everything forward in search of an equaliser.
England, however, defended heroically. Pickford remained assured between the posts, while the backline produced a series of crucial blocks and clearances to withstand relentless Mexican pressure in front of a deafening Azteca crowd.
When the final whistle sounded, England celebrated a hard-earned victory that secured their place among the tournament’s final eight.
The Three Lions will now prepare for a blockbuster quarter-final showdown against Erling Haaland’s Norway on July 11 in Miami, with a place in the World Cup semi-finals at stake.
