Norway produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating five-time champions Brazil 2-1 to book a historic place in the quarter-finals for the first time in the nation’s history.

Erling Haaland once again proved why he is regarded as one of the world’s deadliest strikers, scoring a sensational late brace to inspire the Vikings to a famous victory and end Brazil’s hopes of lifting a sixth World Cup title.

It was a landmark night for Norwegian football as Ståle Solbakken’s men delivered a disciplined and fearless performance to eliminate one of the tournament favourites.

The contest burst into life from the opening whistle, with Norway briefly celebrating what they believed was an early goal before it was ruled out for offside.

Brazil were then handed a golden opportunity to seize control in the 15th minute after winning a penalty. Bruno Guimarães stepped up confidently, but goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland guessed correctly and produced a magnificent save to preserve the deadlock.

That save proved to be one of the defining moments of the match.

The South Americans dominated possession for much of the contest and created several dangerous opportunities through Endrick, Neymar and their attacking stars, but Norway’s disciplined defence stood firm, with Nyland delivering an inspired performance between the posts.

After soaking up relentless pressure, Norway struck when it mattered most.

In the 82nd minute, Andreas Schjelderup whipped in a superb cross from the left, and Haaland climbed above the Brazilian defenders to power a brilliant header beyond Alisson, sending the Norwegian supporters into wild celebrations.

With Brazil desperately committing bodies forward in search of an equaliser, Norway struck another devastating blow.

Ten minutes later, Haaland found space just outside the penalty area before unleashing a thunderous left-footed strike that flew past Alisson and into the back of the net to double Norway’s advantage and put one foot firmly in the quarter-finals.

Brazil managed to reduce the deficit deep into stoppage time after Leo Østigård fouled Casemiro inside the penalty area.

Neymar calmly converted the resulting penalty to make it 2-1, but the comeback never materialised as Norway held firm through the final moments to secure one of the greatest victories in the country’s football history.

The final whistle sparked emotional celebrations among the Norwegian players and supporters as the Vikings secured a place among the final eight for the first time ever at a FIFA World Cup.

Norway will now face England in a mouthwatering quarter-final clash after the Three Lions edged tournament hosts Mexico 3-2 in another dramatic knockout encounter.

For Brazil, the defeat brings a disappointing end to their World Cup campaign. For Norway, however, the dream continues, with Haaland leading a fearless generation determined to write even more history on football’s biggest stage.
