Antoine Semenyo emerged the hero as Manchester City defeated Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley to win the FA Cup in a tense and hard-fought final.

The encounter appeared destined for extra time after a largely cagey and uninspiring contest, but Semenyo produced a moment of brilliance in the 72nd minute to hand Pep Guardiola’s side another major trophy.

Erling Haaland, who battled tirelessly throughout the game despite limited opportunities, created the decisive moment with a dangerous delivery into the box. Semenyo timed his run perfectly before flicking a superb right-footed finish beyond Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to break the deadlock.

The goal proved enough to secure victory for Manchester City, who added the FA Cup to the Carabao Cup already won earlier in the season. The triumph also ended City’s recent run of final disappointments against Manchester United and Crystal Palace.

For Chelsea, however, it was another painful outing at Wembley as the Blues suffered a record fourth consecutive FA Cup final defeat, ending their hopes of winning silverware this season.

Although City eventually celebrated success, Guardiola’s men were far from their fluent best. Instead of the free-flowing football often associated with the reigning champions, this victory was built on determination, resilience and patience.

Guardiola’s muted celebrations after claiming his third FA Cup title reflected the demanding nature of the contest, with City forced to grind out the result rather than dominate in style.

Semenyo once again justified his £65 million move from Bournemouth in January, continuing to impress since arriving at the Etihad Stadium. The forward has adapted seamlessly to life at City and delivered when it mattered most on the biggest domestic stage.

Manchester City will now turn their focus back to the Premier League title race, with a crucial clash against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium next on the agenda. Guardiola’s side remain two points behind Arsenal with two matches left to play as they continue their pursuit of another domestic treble.

Chelsea, meanwhile, were left reflecting on missed opportunities after enjoying encouraging spells in the second half without finding the breakthrough they needed.

The Blues must now focus on securing European football through their remaining Premier League fixtures, beginning with a crucial showdown against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.

Off the pitch, Chelsea are also preparing for another managerial rebuild following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior. The club are reportedly accelerating efforts to appoint former Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso as their new head coach.

Should the move materialise, Alonso’s arrival would provide fresh optimism after a frustrating and disappointing campaign that ended in heartbreak at Wembley
