Arsenal booked their place in the UEFA Champions League final for the first time in two decades after Bukayo Saka’s decisive strike secured a 2-1 aggregate victory over Atletico Madrid at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

Mikel Arteta’s men produced a disciplined and determined performance to overcome the Spanish giants and continue their dream of winning both the Premier League and Champions League this season.

After the first leg ended 1-1, the return fixture in North London began cautiously, with both sides fully aware of the enormous stakes. Chances were limited in a tense opening period as Arsenal and Atletico battled for control.

However, the breakthrough finally arrived just before halftime. Leandro Trossard tested Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak with a powerful effort, and although the Slovenian shot-stopper managed to parry the ball, Bukayo Saka reacted quickest to poke home the rebound in the 44th minute.

The move was brilliantly initiated by Viktor Gyokeres, whose clever build-up play helped unlock Atletico’s stubborn defence.

Despite going behind, Atletico Madrid remained dangerous throughout the contest. Declan Rice produced a crucial last-ditch tackle to deny Giuliano Simeone in the first half, while Gabriel later made a vital intervention after Simeone rounded Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya in the second period.

Arsenal also had opportunities to put the tie beyond doubt. Viktor Gyokeres came close to extending the Gunners’ aggregate advantage after connecting with a cross from substitute Piero Hincapie, but the striker fired over the bar from inside the area.

Fortunately for the hosts, the missed chance proved insignificant as Arsenal stood firm defensively and successfully protected their lead until the final whistle.

The victory sends Arsenal into their first Champions League final since 2006, when they suffered defeat against FC Barcelona in Paris.

Arteta’s side will now face either Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain in the final scheduled for May 30 in Budapest, where the North London club will aim to lift Europe’s most prestigious trophy for the very first time.
