Arsenal secured their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after a tense and tactical goalless draw against Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium, progressing 1-0 on aggregate.
Holding a narrow advantage from the first leg in Portugal courtesy of Kai Havertz’s late winner Mikel Arteta’s side entered the return fixture knowing that discipline and composure would be key to finishing the job.
The Gunners began brightly, dominating possession and attempting to control the tempo early on. However, despite their attacking intent, clear-cut chances proved difficult to come by. Instead, it was Sporting who looked more threatening in the final third during the first half.
Francisco Trincão and Pedro Gonçalves both tested Arsenal’s defensive resolve, while a misplaced pass from goalkeeper David Raya briefly handed the visitors a golden opportunity. The closest moment came when Geny Catamo struck the post with a powerful volley after a pinpoint cross from Maxi Araújo, sending a wave of anxiety through the home crowd.
Inside the Emirates, tension steadily grew as Arsenal struggled to extend their lead, especially following their recent domestic setback. The atmosphere reflected the stakes, with every Sporting attack raising nerves among supporters wary of a potential comeback.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Sporting continuing to probe. Araújo came closest for the visitors after the break but failed to hit the target from a promising position inside the box. Arsenal, meanwhile, sought to relieve pressure through set pieces and counter-attacks.
Substitute Leandro Trossard nearly sealed the tie late on when his header from a corner crashed against the post, denying the Gunners a decisive goal on the night.
Despite the stalemate, Arsenal’s aggregate advantage proved sufficient, marking a significant milestone for the club. The result sees them reach back-to-back Champions League semi-finals for the first time in their history.
Attention now turns to a blockbuster semi-final clash against Atlético Madrid, as Arsenal continue their pursuit of European glory.
