Nigeria’s new striking sensation Akor Adams made a dream start to his international career, scoring on his debut as the Super Eagles defeated Lesotho 2–1 in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Friday in Polokwane.
The Sevilla forward doubled Nigeria’s lead midway through the second half after connecting superbly with a pass from Victor Osimhen, sealing an important victory that kept Nigeria’s qualification hopes alive.
Adams’ debut goal puts him in elite company, as he becomes one of only a handful of Nigerian players to have scored in their first senior international appearance.
The 25-year-old joins a select group that includes Julius Aghahowa, who scored in Nigeria’s final group game against Morocco at the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations, and Obafemi Martins, who found the net in a friendly against Ireland in May 2004.
Other players who also achieved the rare feat include Ekigho Ehiosun, Stephen Ayo Makinwa, and Femi Opabunmi.
Adams’ goal continues his fine run of form — just days earlier, he found the back of the net in Sevilla’s 4–1 LaLiga victory over Barcelona, underlining his confidence and consistency in front of goal.
Adams’ consistent performances at club level earned him a call-up from national team coach Eric Chelle, and the forward wasted no time in repaying that faith. Coming on as a substitute, Adams scored just 17 minutes after stepping onto the pitch, instantly winning over fans and validating his inclusion in the squad.
The striker’s debut goal is being hailed as a sign of Nigeria’s attacking depth and the emergence of yet another potent option in the Super Eagles’ frontline ahead of their next qualifier against Benin Republic in Uyo.
