WAFU B U-20: Burkina Faso Thrash Flying Eagles 4-1 To Secure Sole AFCON Ticket

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final of the WAFU B U-20 Championship on Sunday, missing out on the regional title and the sole qualification ticket to the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
Burkina Faso produced a dominant performance from the opening whistle, racing into a commanding lead before Nigeria could settle into the contest.
The Burkinabè side stunned the Flying Eagles by scoring three goals inside the opening 15 minutes, putting Abdul Maikaba’s team in an extremely difficult position before the first half had even reached its midway point.
Nigeria attempted to respond and find a way back into the final, but Burkina Faso remained firmly in control and continued to create dangerous opportunities.
The West Africans eventually added a fourth goal, effectively putting the contest beyond the Flying Eagles’ reach.
Nigeria managed to score a consolation goal, but it was too little to spark a comeback as Burkina Faso comfortably saw out the remainder of the encounter.
The result also continued Burkina Faso’s dominance over Nigeria in the tournament. The two sides had previously met in the group stage, where Burkina Faso secured a 2-0 victory over the Flying Eagles.
By winning the WAFU B U-20 Championship, Burkina Faso secured the region’s sole qualification ticket for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.
The continental tournament will also serve as a qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
For Nigeria, the emphatic defeat brings a disappointing end to their WAFU B campaign, while Burkina Faso celebrate a comprehensive victory and a place at next year’s continental championship.
