WAFCON 2026: Super Falcons’ Title Defence Ends After 1-0 Defeat To Cameroon

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in a tense quarter-final encounter on Sunday evening.
The defending champions entered the knockout clash determined to continue their pursuit of another continental title, but Cameroon’s resilience and a moment of individual brilliance proved decisive.
The match was settled in the 19th minute when Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen produced a stunning free-kick, sending the ball beyond the Nigerian defence and into the net to give Cameroon a crucial lead.
The Super Falcons responded with increased attacking pressure as they searched for an equaliser, creating opportunities and pushing Cameroon deeper into their own half.
However, Nigeria struggled to find the decisive finish as the Cameroonian defence remained disciplined throughout the remainder of the contest.
Despite their best efforts, the Super Falcons could not break through before the final whistle, with Cameroon’s early advantage proving enough to secure a place in the semi-finals.
The defeat brings an end to Nigeria’s hopes of successfully defending the WAFCON title they won at the previous tournament after defeating Morocco in the final.
For Justine Madugu’s side, attention now turns to their next fixture against South Africa on Thursday in Casablanca, where a place in the Inter-Confederation Playoff Tournament will be at stake.
The Super Falcons will be determined to respond positively and keep their hopes of securing a route to another major international tournament alive
