Nigerian midfielder Papa Daniel has signed a contract with Slovenian top-flight club NK Celje, leaving Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Niger Tornadoes behind.
The 23-year-old signed a four-year deal with the Slovenian champions, running until June 2028.
Daniel had a breakthrough season in the NPFL last season, scoring four goals and providing three assists in 21 appearances from a defensive midfield role.
His impressive performances earned him a first call-up to the Super Eagles, making his debut in May during a 2-1 win over Ghana at the Unity Cup.
The transfer to Europe means Daniel will miss the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN), which is reserved for home-based players.
Despite his absence, Super Eagles B coach Eric Chelle is confident the team will remain competitive, having recorded impressive wins in their warm-up matches.
At NK Celje, Daniel becomes the seventh Nigerian to play for the club, joining a list that includes Sunday Chibuike, Sunny Omoregie, Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi, and Sunday Adetunji.
The Slovenian side, league champions in 2020 and 2024, finished fourth last season but are aiming for another title challenge with their strengthened squad.
