First for Africa! Flamingos Stun Japan To Become U-17 Women’s World Cup Champions

Nigeria’s Flamingos have etched their names into football history after defeating Japan 2-1 in the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Rabat on Saturday night to claim their maiden world title.
The remarkable triumph marks a historic milestone for Nigerian and African football, with the Flamingos becoming the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Japan began the final with attacking intent, putting the Nigerian defence under early pressure in search of an opening goal.
However, Coach Akeem Busari’s side gradually settled into the contest and began creating dangerous opportunities of their own.
Oluebube Umejiaku and Awawu Bashiru both threatened the Japanese defence, while Umejiaku came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute, only for her header to crash against the crossbar.
Nigeria eventually found the breakthrough a minute later when Bashiru unleashed a stunning long-range effort that beat the Japanese goalkeeper to put the Flamingos ahead.
The Nigerian youngsters carried their 1-0 advantage into the half-time interval, having demonstrated determination and attacking quality throughout the opening period.
The Flamingos wasted little time extending their lead after the restart, with Umejiaku producing a brilliant finish just two minutes into the second half to make it 2-0.
With a two-goal cushion, Nigeria appeared firmly in control, but Japan refused to surrender.
The Asian side intensified their attacking efforts and eventually reduced the deficit in the 80th minute through Fuki Ito, setting up a nervy final phase.
Despite the late Japanese pressure, the Flamingos displayed remarkable composure, defensive discipline and fighting spirit to protect their advantage until the final whistle.
When the referee brought the contest to an end, celebrations erupted as Nigeria secured a historic 2-1 victory and lifted the coveted trophy for the first time.
Beyond the celebrations, the achievement represents a landmark moment for African women’s football, as the Flamingos have broken new ground by bringing the U-17 Women’s World Cup crown to the continent.
Under the guidance of Akeem Busari, Nigeria’s young stars have delivered a memorable campaign, culminating in a final victory that will remain a defining chapter in the history of Nigerian football.
The Flamingos are no longer just participants on the global stage. They are world champions!
