NPFL Transfer: Race for Olatunji Baruwa Intensifies as Clubs Battle for Goalkeeping Expert
3 min read
The race to secure the services of former Super Eagles Goalkeepers’ Trainer, Olatunji Baruwa MON, is gathering momentum, with several Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clubs reportedly vying for one of the country’s most respected goalkeeping coaches ahead of the new season.
Baruwa, who currently serves as the goalkeepers’ trainer at Nasarawa United, has become one of the most sought-after backroom staff in the domestic league following another impressive campaign that reinforced his reputation as one of Nigerian football’s leading goalkeeping specialists.
Widely regarded as a coach capable of transforming goalkeeping departments, Baruwa played a significant role in strengthening Nasarawa United’s last line of defence while working alongside experienced tacticians including Coach Adams, Coach Kabiru Dogo and Coach Salisu Yusuf.
His wealth of experience extends far beyond the NPFL. Over the years, the Osogbo-born coach has worked with several of Nigeria’s national teams, including the Future Eagles, Golden Eaglets, Flying Eagles and the Super Eagles, building an impressive résumé that continues to attract admiration across the football community.
With preparations for the new NPFL season expected to begin on July 14, Nasarawa United are eager to retain the services of the CAF B Licence holder as they look to build on last season’s performances.
The Solid Miners narrowly missed out on a continental qualification spot and believe maintaining stability within their technical crew, particularly in the goalkeeping department, will be crucial to achieving greater success in the upcoming campaign.
However, keeping Baruwa may prove increasingly difficult as interest in his services continues to grow.
Nigeria Tornadoes have emerged as one of the clubs closely monitoring the situation following the dissolution of the club’s management and technical crew. The Minna-based side is preparing for a major rebuilding process, and Baruwa’s experience at both club and national team levels makes him an attractive candidate to be part of that new project.
In addition to Nigeria Tornadoes, two other NPFL clubs are also believed to be making moves to lure the highly-rated coach away from Lafia.
Those clubs are understood to be keen on replicating the organisation, discipline and technical standards Baruwa has instilled in Nasarawa United’s goalkeeping unit, viewing him as a valuable addition capable of strengthening their own technical setups.
Beyond his achievements as a goalkeeping coach, Baruwa has also demonstrated his versatility in management, having previously served as head coach of former Nigeria National League side Osun United.
His experience in both technical leadership and player development further enhances his profile as one of the most respected football coaches in the country.
As the transfer window gathers pace, Baruwa’s future is expected to remain one of the most closely watched stories in the NPFL.
Whether he chooses to remain at Nasarawa United and continue the project he has helped build, or embraces a fresh challenge elsewhere, one thing appears certain: any club that secures Olatunji Baruwa’s signature will be acquiring far more than a goalkeepers’ trainer they will be bringing in an experienced football professional with a proven record of building structure, developing talent and raising standards.
