Gabriel Martinelli emerged as the hero for Brazil on Tuesday, netting a dramatic 95th-minute winner to edge past a defiant Japan side.
The victory secures Brazil’s place in the World Cup Round of 16, where they will face either Norway or the Ivory Coast.
The match began as a tactical masterclass from Japan. Defending with a disciplined five-man backline, they frustrated the five-time champions, cutting off passing lanes and stifling Brazil’s creative rhythm.
The breakthrough came in the first half when Kaishu Sano intercepted a loose pass from Danilo, driving past Casemiro to drill a clinical strike into the bottom corner.
At halftime, a shock appeared to be on the cards. Brazil looked disjointed and struggled to find space in the final third, finding themselves trailing against a well-drilled Japanese defense.
Brazil emerged from the break with renewed vigor, bolstered by the introduction of Endrick in place of the injured Lucas Paqueta. Carlo Ancelotti shifted the strategy, abandoning intricate play around the box in favor of high-volume aerial service.
The Seleção launched 28 crosses into the box during the second half averaging one every two minutes and the pressure finally told.
Ten minutes after the restart, Casemiro rose majestically at the back post to power home a header from a Gabriel cross, leveling the scores. Brazil nearly took the lead minutes later in spectacular fashion when Vinicius Jr. produced a dazzling run, nutmegging a marker and jinking through the defense, only to be denied by a brilliant fingertip save from Japan’s Zion Suzuki.
As the match neared its conclusion, Japan appeared to have neutralized the aerial threat. However, in the 95th minute, disaster struck for the Samurai Blue. Ao Tanaka surrendered possession on the edge of his own penalty area, and Brazil pounced. Bruno Guimaraes quickly slipped the ball to Martinelli, who took a composed touch before slotting the winner in off the post.
It was a heartbreaking conclusion for Japan, who matched their illustrious opponents for long stretches. For Brazil, it was a display of championship grit, proving that even when the flair isn’t flowing, they possess the composure to seize the moment when it matters most.
Brazil now turns its focus toward the Round of 16, where they await the outcome of the Norway vs. Ivory Coast fixture to determine their path to the quarter-finals.
