Marcello Hails Retired Heartland Captain Nnaemeka Anyanwu, Describes Him As An Irreplaceable Defender

The Head Scout and Technical Assistant of Gulf United Football Club, a UAE Division One side in Dubai, Marcello Anyanwu, has paid glowing tribute to former Heartland FC captain Nnaemeka Anyanwu, describing him as an irreplaceable player in the Nigerian domestic league.
Marcello, who is also a former coach of MFM FC of Lagos, made this known while speaking with our correspondent from his base in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where he celebrated the remarkable contributions and achievements of the former defender to Nigerian football.
The tribute comes following the official retirement of Nnaemeka Anyanwu from active football last weekend, shortly before Heartland FC’s league encounter against Crown FC of Ogbomoso.
A respected figure in Nigerian football, Anyanwu enjoyed an illustrious career spanning several years, representing notable clubs, including Rangers International of Enugu, Enyimba International of Aba, Abia Warriors, Lobi Stars and Heartland FC, alongside his football experience outside Nigeria.
Reacting to the retirement of the former Heartland skipper, Marcello expressed disappointment over the culture of celebrating football personalities only after they have left the game, insisting that outstanding individuals deserve recognition and appreciation while they are still alive.
“It’s quite a pity that men’s efforts are praised, loved and appreciated after they are no more , rather than when they are still living.
“In the case of my brother, Nnaemeka Anyanwu, I will continue to celebrate him while he is still alive.
“He is one of the best defenders in the Nigerian league. He came, he saw and he conquered.
“I wish you well in your future endeavours,” the Imo State-born tactician stated.
Marcello’s tribute further highlights the remarkable impact Anyanwu made during his playing career, particularly through his leadership qualities, defensive abilities, consistency and commitment to the clubs he represented.
The former Heartland captain’s retirement marks the end of an important chapter in his football journey, but his contributions to Nigerian football will remain memorable.
As he begins life after active football, Marcello’s heartfelt message serves as a reminder that football legends deserve to be celebrated, appreciated and honoured while they are still around to witness the recognition of their contributions.
