South Africa created a landmark moment in the nation’s football history on Thursday morning after defeating South Korea 1-0 to secure a place in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time.

Bafana Bafana rose to the occasion in a high-pressure Group A decider, producing a disciplined and determined performance to earn the victory they desperately needed and keep their World Cup dream alive.

Having opened their campaign with a defeat to Mexico before playing out a draw against Czechia, South Africa entered the final group match knowing that only three points would guarantee qualification to the knockout stages.

South Korea, equally determined to progress, started the contest on the front foot and almost grabbed an early lead inside the opening three minutes.

Defender Kim Min-jae met a dangerous cross inside the penalty area with a powerful header, but South Africa’s resolute defence reacted quickly to block the effort before it could trouble the goalkeeper.

The Taeguk Warriors continued to pile on the pressure, and five minutes later Kang-in Lee found himself in an excellent scoring position. However, the midfielder failed to keep his effort on target after connecting with another inviting delivery into the box.

After surviving the early pressure, South Africa gradually settled into the match and began to threaten going forward.

Midway through the first half, Evidence Makgopa came within inches of opening the scoring after reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the penalty area. His powerful strike looked destined for the back of the net until South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu produced a superb reflex save to keep the scores level.

Both sides continued to battle for control, but neither could find the breakthrough before halftime.

The decisive moment finally arrived in the 63rd minute.

Tshepang Moremi sparked a swift attacking move before delivering a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Thapelo Maseko. Showing remarkable composure under pressure, Maseko calmly slotted his finish into the bottom corner to send the South African supporters into celebration and hand Bafana Bafana a priceless 1-0 lead.

The goal transformed the atmosphere inside the stadium as South Africa shifted their focus toward protecting the advantage.

South Korea responded by committing more players forward in search of an equaliser, creating sustained pressure during the closing stages of the match.

However, South Africa’s defence stood firm, producing a disciplined and resilient display to frustrate the Asian side and preserve their narrow advantage until the final whistle.

The victory, coupled with Mexico’s win over Czechia in the other Group A fixture, ensured South Africa finished second in the group and advanced to the Round of 32.

It is a historic achievement for Bafana Bafana, who have now reached the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time, marking another unforgettable chapter in South African football history.

Having overcome adversity to qualify, South Africa will head into the knockout rounds full of confidence, believing they can continue their remarkable journey and challenge some of the tournament’s biggest footballing nations.
