Egypt etched their name into the history books on Monday morning after recording their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory, coming from behind to defeat New Zealand 3-1 in an entertaining Group G encounter at BC Place.

Inspired by captain Mohamed Salah, the Pharaohs produced a spirited second-half comeback to secure a landmark win that lifted them to the top of Group G and strengthened their hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The historic triumph marks a significant milestone for Egyptian football. Despite being the first African and Arab nation to participate in a FIFA World Cup back in 1934, and making subsequent appearances in 1990 and 2018, Egypt had never previously celebrated a victory on football’s biggest stage.

New Zealand began the match with confidence and nearly made an immediate breakthrough. Just two minutes into the contest, Sarpreet Singh found space outside the penalty area and sent a dangerous effort narrowly wide of the post.

The Oceania representatives continued to threaten, and in the 14th minute Elijah Just forced Egyptian goalkeeper Oufa Shobeir into an excellent save with a powerful strike from inside the box.

A minute later, New Zealand found the opener. Tim Payne delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, where Finn Surman rose above the Egyptian defence to power a header into the roof of the net, giving the Kiwis a deserved 1-0 lead.

Egypt struggled to find their rhythm in the early stages but gradually grew into the contest. Omar Marmoush tested goalkeeper Max Crocombe with a long-range effort in the 27th minute, while Mohamed Salah came close eight minutes later when his free-kick drifted narrowly wide.

The Pharaohs entered the second half determined to mount a comeback, and Salah almost levelled immediately after the restart. The Liverpool forward found himself in a promising position inside the area but was denied by a brilliant save from Crocombe.

Egypt’s persistence finally paid off in the 59th minute. Mohamed Hany produced an excellent run down the flank before delivering a dangerous cross into the box. Mostafa Ziko timed his movement perfectly and powered a header into the roof of the net to bring Egypt level at 1-1.

The equaliser injected confidence into the Egyptian side, and they continued to push forward in search of a second goal.

Their breakthrough moment arrived in the 68th minute when Salah showcased his world-class quality. Receiving a clever pass from Mostafa Ziko inside the area, the Egyptian captain kept his composure and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner to complete the turnaround and put Egypt 2-1 ahead.

With New Zealand pushing forward in search of an equaliser, Egypt struck again to put the contest beyond doubt.

In the 82nd minute, Salah turned provider as his perfectly delivered corner kick found Trezeguet inside the box. The winger rose highest and directed a powerful header into the net to seal a memorable 3-1 victory for the Pharaohs.

The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations among the Egyptian players and supporters as the nation celebrated a long-awaited World Cup breakthrough.

Beyond the three points, the result carries enormous historical significance for Egypt, ending decades of waiting for a first victory at the FIFA World Cup and reaffirming their status as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.

The win sends Egypt to the summit of Group G ahead of a decisive final group-stage showdown against Iran. With knockout qualification now firmly within reach, the Pharaohs will be aiming to build on this historic success and continue their impressive World Cup journey.
