Lionel Messi added another remarkable achievement to his glittering career on Monday night, becoming the FIFA World Cup’s all-time leading goalscorer as Argentina defeated Austria 2-0 to secure qualification for the knockout stages of the 2026 tournament.

The Argentine captain scored both goals at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, surpassing German legend Miroslav Klose’s longstanding record and helping the reigning world champions maintain their perfect start to Group J.

With two victories from two matches, Argentina have all but secured top spot in the group and continue to underline their credentials as one of the favourites to retain the World Cup crown.

Despite the significance of the occasion, the match began in relatively subdued fashion. Austria remained disciplined and compact defensively, limiting Argentina’s attacking opportunities while offering little threat going forward.

The Albiceleste were handed an excellent opportunity to break the deadlock inside the opening ten minutes when Lautaro Martínez was brought down inside the penalty area. Following a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot, presenting Messi with a golden chance to put Argentina ahead.

However, in a rare moment of misfortune, the Argentine superstar dragged his penalty wide of the target in the ninth minute, leaving supporters stunned and Austria breathing a sigh of relief.

Argentina continued to dominate possession but found it difficult to penetrate Austria’s organised defensive structure. As the first half approached its conclusion, the South Americans finally found the breakthrough.

A well-worked attacking move down the left flank created the opening. Facundo Medina drilled a low cross into the penalty area, and Thiago Almada cleverly allowed the ball to run through his legs. Waiting behind him was Messi, who calmly swept a first-time effort into the corner of the net.

The goal carried enormous historical significance.

It was Messi’s 17th FIFA World Cup goal, moving him beyond Miroslav Klose’s previous record of 16 and making the Argentine icon the tournament’s all-time leading scorer.

The historic strike sparked celebrations among Argentina’s supporters as another chapter was added to Messi’s extraordinary legacy.

After the interval, Austria remained committed and organised but struggled to create meaningful opportunities against Argentina’s experienced defence. The reigning champions controlled proceedings without needing to reach their highest level, comfortably managing the contest while waiting for opportunities on the counterattack.

As the match entered stoppage time, Messi delivered one final moment of brilliance.

Argentina launched a swift counterattack deep into added time, and the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner finished clinically to double his tally for the evening and seal a 2-0 victory. The goal was his 18th in FIFA World Cup history, extending his newly established record and further cementing his place among football’s immortals.

The victory guarantees Argentina’s place in the Round of 32 and leaves Lionel Scaloni’s side in a commanding position ahead of their final group-stage encounter against Jordan on June 27.

With qualification already secured, Scaloni may choose to rotate his squad and rest several key players before the knockout rounds begin.

For Austria, the defeat represents a setback but not the end of their qualification hopes. Having won their opening match against Jordan, they remain well positioned to advance and will look to secure passage to the next round when they face Algeria in their final Group J fixture.

While Argentina celebrated another important victory, the night ultimately belonged to Lionel Messi. Four decades after Diego Maradona inspired Argentina to World Cup glory, Messi has once again etched his name into football history, standing alone as the greatest goalscorer the FIFA World Cup has ever seen.
