Flying Eagles Secure 2027 U-20 AFCON Qualification After Penalty Shootout Victory Over Côte d’Ivoire

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have secured qualification for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after defeating hosts Côte d’Ivoire 4-3 on penalties in the semi-finals of the WAFU-B U-20 Championship following a thrilling 2-2 draw after extra time.
The hard-fought victory at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro also booked Nigeria’s place in the WAFU-B Championship final as Coach Abdu Maikaba’s side moved one step closer to retaining their regional crown.
The hosts made a bright start and broke the deadlock in the 18th minute when forward Namory Keita reacted quickest to a deflected ball inside the penalty area before calmly finishing past the Nigerian goalkeeper.
Both teams created opportunities during the remainder of the first half, but neither side could add to the score as Côte d’Ivoire carried their slender advantage into the break.
Nigeria returned with renewed purpose after halftime and eventually found the equaliser in the 68th minute.
Captain Simon Habila rose highest to meet a well-delivered cross, powering his header into the back of the net to restore parity and swing the momentum in Nigeria’s favour.
With neither team able to find a winner in regulation time, the contest headed into extra time.
The Flying Eagles looked set to complete the turnaround in the 95th minute when Habila grabbed his second goal of the evening, putting Nigeria 2-1 ahead.
However, the hosts refused to surrender as Namory Keita struck again before the end of the first period of extra time, capitalising on a defensive lapse to level the scores at 2-2.
Both sides continued to search for a decisive goal during the second half of extra time, but resolute defending at both ends forced the encounter into a penalty shootout.
Goalkeeper Lawani Clinton emerged as Nigeria’s hero, producing two crucial saves during the shootout to inspire the Flying Eagles to a 4-3 victory on penalties and spark celebrations among the Nigerian contingent.
The win guarantees Nigeria a place at the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations while also securing a spot in the WAFU-B U-20 Championship final.
For Côte d’Ivoire, the defeat brings a heartbreaking end to an impressive campaign on home soil. After progressing through the group stage with a perfect record, the Young Elephants fell just short in the semi-finals, missing out on both the regional final and automatic qualification for the continental championship.
