The Atlas Lion Cubs have advanced to their first-ever FIFA U-20 World Cup final after a dramatic 5–4 penalty shootout win over France, following a tense 1–1 draw in Wednesday’s semifinal clash in Valparaíso, Chile.
Once again, the North Africans displayed tactical discipline and mental fortitude — hallmarks of their incredible run in this tournament.
Just as they did in the quarterfinal victory over the United States, Morocco allowed France to dominate possession but struck with precision on the counterattack.
The breakthrough came midway through the first half under controversial circumstances. VAR intervened after a tussle in the French penalty area, awarding Morocco a spot kick. Yassir Zabiri’s initial strike hit the post but rebounded off goalkeeper Lisandru Olmeta and into the net, gifting Morocco the lead and sending their fans into raptures.
France came roaring back after the break. Their persistence paid off in the 60th minute when AS Monaco’s Lucas Michal finished expertly from a Moustapha Dabo cross — the first goal Morocco have conceded from open play in the entire tournament.
Despite France’s growing pressure, Morocco’s backline, anchored by captain Amine Boukamir, held firm.
Extra time saw few chances, though France were reduced to ten men when Rabby Nzingoula received his second yellow card.
The penalty shootout was a nerve-wracking affair. Both sides converted confidently early on, but France’s Gady Beyuku was the first to falter, hitting the post. French goalkeeper Olmeta momentarily restored hope by saving Mohammed Hamony’s effort, sending the shootout into sudden death.
Then came the defining moment: Moroccan substitute goalkeeper Hakim Mesbahi dived to his right to deny Djylian N’Guessan, sealing a famous 5–4 triumph and sparking wild celebrations among the Moroccan players and fans.
Morocco now await the winner between Argentina and Colombia in Sunday’s grand finale — becoming the first African nation to reach the U-20 World Cup final since Ghana’s 2009 triumph on home soil.
A historic night for African football. A new generation of Atlas Lions has roared its way into legend.
