EURONPFL:Ihemekwele, Ezinwa Strike as Enyimba Continue Resurgence With Win Over 10-Man Plateau United
Enyimba’s resurgence continued as they defeated 10-man Plateau United 2-0 on Sunday at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba, with striker Ifeanyi Ihemekwele and Richard Ezinwa delivering impressive performances for the hosts in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) week seven fixture.
The hosts demonstrated their early dominance by controlling possession and applying high-pressure tactics from the opening moments. Enyimba created several opportunities in the initial stages, but their inability to convert chances in the final third allowed Plateau United to maintain their defensive shape and compact formation.
The deadlock was broken in the 29th minute through Ihemekwele, triggering jubilant celebrations among the home supporters.
Enyimba emerged for the second half with heightened determination, and their advantage increased significantly in the 58th minute when Plateau United’s Wisdom Magbisa received a red card, reducing the visitors to ten players and placing them in a precarious position in Aba.
Enyimba faced a setback when key midfielder Idris Abubakar departed the field due to a head injury.
Ezinwa extended the lead in the 66th minute with a clinical finish, effectively securing the victory and eliminating any remaining doubt about the outcome.
The Peace Boys persisted in their efforts and mounted an offensive push during the final stages seeking a goal. ThankGod Chinemezie’s best opportunity arrived in the 78th minute, but his close-range shot narrowly missed the target, providing relief to goalkeeper Dede Dare and the home supporters. Enyimba’s defensive unit remained steadfast, comfortably managing late pressure including a corner kick in the 85th minute.
Enyimba coach Lawrence Ukaegbu expressed satisfaction with his team’s continued improvement, affirming that the People’s Elephant have regained their competitive edge.
“We have returned to our best form, and I can assure you of this. Our success has been built on consistency and the players’ commitment to working as one unit,” coach Ukaegbu stated to journalists following the match.
“The players have now developed a comprehensive understanding of the expectations we have established for them. This comprehension accounts for the remarkable resurgence you have observed, he elaborated.
Plateau United’s head coach Gbenga Ogunbote expressed regret regarding his team’s failure to capitalize on their opportunity in Aba, following the decisive 2-0 loss.
“We arrived with a strategic approach; regrettably, we were unsuccessful in the match,” Ogunbote acknowledged.
“Notwithstanding the outcome, such occurrences are inherent to competitive sport. We shall proceed forward, extract constructive lessons, and implement necessary improvements.”
