SWAN Set To Honour Ondo Sports Icons, Heroes At Grand Awards Night

The Ondo State Chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has concluded plans to honour distinguished personalities who have made outstanding contributions to the development and promotion of sports in the State since it’s creation, 50 years ago.

The personalities will be recognised at the Ondo Sports Icon Award of Excellence, scheduled to hold on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at the NMA House, opposite Akure Mall, Alagbaka, Akure.

The Chairman of SWAN in Ondo State, Segun Giwa, and Chairman of the Awards Committee, Akintunde Akinsemola, said the initiative is aimed at celebrating deserving sports heroes and stakeholders whose contributions may otherwise have gone unrecognised.

Among those expected to be honoured with the Golden Award former Governor Olusegun Mimiko; erstwhile Chairman of Nigeria Premier Football League, Gbenga Elegbeleye and former Deputy-Governor, Ambassador Omolade Oluwateru among others.

Also prominent former athletes/coaches like Seun Ogunkoya, Adura Olalehin, Odunayo Adekuoroye, Godfrey Oboabona, Joe Aribo, Rasheedat Ajibade and Lawrence Adegbehingbe will be honored.

Oganisations such as OSRC Media group and Ondo State Printing and Publishing Corporation (OSPPC)

and as well as Educational Institutions like Federal University of Technology (FUTA) and Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) whose contributions have shaped the state’s sporting landscape are to be recognised too.

The recognition is not only about celebrating past achievements but also encouraging continued investment in sports and inspiring a new generation of athletes and sports administrators.

The Ondo Sports Icon Award of Excellence is expected to bring together sports administrators, athletes, sports writers, business leaders and other stakeholders for an evening dedicated to celebrating the rich sporting heritage and achievements of Ondo State.
