A new era of administrative excellence is sweeping across the Nigerian sports ecosystem. Over the past few months, the National Sports Commission (NSC), operating under the visionary leadership of Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade, has consistently proven that intentional planning and strategic partnerships are the bedrock of sporting success. From executing what is arguably the most seamless Commonwealth Games preparation in recent history to securing legacy-defining partnerships, the NSC is not just meeting expectations—they are actively raising the bar.

The hallmark of the NSC’s recent administrative triumph lies in their athlete-centric approach to the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Eradicating the last-minute logistical nightmares of the past, the Commission proactively set up a world-class training camp for over 72 Nigerian athletes in Aberdeen, Scotland. The early provision of top-tier training facilities, elite medical support, and improved welfare packages has drawn massive praise from the athletes themselves. Paralympic Champion and Team Nigeria Captain, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, recently commended the NSC, noting that the unprecedented level of support has significantly boosted the squad’s morale and confidence as they prepare to conquer Glasgow. To further sweeten the pot, the NSC has announced a highly competitive cash reward structure for medal-winning athletes and their coaches, proving that the welfare of the Nigerian athlete is now paramount.

Understanding that the glory of Team Nigeria must be shared with the millions of fans back home, the NSC recently pulled off a massive broadcast masterstroke. The Commission successfully partnered with The What Network to secure the free-to-air television and streaming rights for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. This landmark agreement guarantees that millions of Nigerians will be able to watch Team Nigeria’s campaign live and for free across terrestrial stations like NTA and TVC, as well as on various streaming platforms. By bringing the Commonwealth Games into every Nigerian home, the NSC is ensuring that the nation’s biggest sporting stars—from Tobi Amusan to Chukwuebuka Enekwechi—are celebrated by the very people they are fighting to make proud.

While the focus remains intensely fixed on Glasgow, the NSC has also secured the future of Nigerian grassroots sports. In a historic development for youth empowerment, the Commission recently signed a formal agreement with the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) to host the second edition of the African School Games, tagged “Abuja 2027.” This partnership aligns perfectly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate to reposition sports from the grassroots. Earning the hosting rights—and receiving the backing of ANOCA President Mustapha Berraf—is a massive vote of confidence in Nigeria’s infrastructural capacity and Shehu Dikko’s leadership.

Whether it is ensuring athletes are comfortably camped in Aberdeen, bringing the games to local television screens through The What Network, or locking down continental hosting rights with ANOCA, the message is clear: The National Sports Commission has fully awakened. Gone are the days of administrative lethargy. Today’s NSC is a dynamic, forward-thinking institution that is meticulously setting a new gold standard for sports governance in Africa. Against all metrics, the Commission continues to break new boundaries.
