The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has officially dismissed head coach Pape Thiaw and every member of his backroom staff following the Lions of Teranga’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The sweeping decision signals the end of Thiaw’s tenure after less than two years in charge, with the federation opting for a fresh direction after the national team’s failure to meet expectations on football’s biggest stage.

Senegal travelled to the tournament as one of Africa’s strongest contenders, buoyed by an impressive qualifying campaign and a squad packed with experienced internationals. They progressed from the group stage with confidence and were widely tipped to challenge for a place in the latter stages of the competition.

However, their World Cup journey came to a painful conclusion in the Round of 32 after a dramatic collapse against Belgium. Holding a comfortable two-goal advantage, the Lions of Teranga were unable to maintain their lead as Belgium staged a remarkable comeback before sealing a 3-2 victory after extra time.

The defeat sent shockwaves through Senegalese football and immediately sparked criticism from supporters, former players and football analysts. Questions were raised over the team’s tactical approach, the timing of substitutions and the inability to manage the game despite being in a commanding position.

With pressure mounting in the days that followed, the FSF responded by carrying out a complete overhaul of the national team’s technical department. The federation confirmed that both Thiaw and his entire coaching staff had been relieved of their duties as part of plans to rebuild ahead of future competitions.

Thiaw took over the reins from Aliou Cissé in 2024 with the responsibility of sustaining Senegal’s rise as one of Africa’s football powerhouses. During his spell in charge, he successfully guided the team to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and also led the Lions of Teranga at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite those achievements, the federation believes a change in leadership is necessary to help the national team regain momentum and compete more effectively on the international stage.

Attention now turns to the search for a new head coach who can restore confidence within the squad, build on Senegal’s wealth of talent and guide the team back into contention for major honours.

The Senegalese Football Federation is expected to begin the recruitment process immediately, with an announcement on Thiaw’s successor anticipated in the coming weeks as preparations begin for the next round of Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and future international assignments.

For one of Africa’s most consistent football nations in recent years, the appointment of the next coach will be crucial in determining whether the Lions of Teranga can quickly recover from their World Cup disappointment and resume their pursuit of continental and global success.
