Africa recorded its first victory of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a dramatic late goal from Amad secured a hard-fought 1-0 win for Ivory Coast against Ecuador in their opening Group E clash on Monday.

The encounter appeared destined to end in a stalemate, with both sides battling intensely throughout the contest. However, just when it seemed the points would be shared, Amad produced a moment of magic in the 90th minute to break Ecuadorian hearts and hand the Elephants a priceless victory.

The result gives the reigning African champions a dream start to their World Cup campaign and marks the first win by an African nation at the expanded 48-team tournament.

Ivory Coast were forced to weather sustained pressure from Ecuador for much of the match. The South Americans looked the more dangerous side in the first half and came agonisingly close to taking the lead on multiple occasions, striking the crossbar twice and creating several clear scoring opportunities.

Despite Ecuador’s attacking threat, the Ivorians remained disciplined and resilient in defence, refusing to buckle under pressure. Their patience was eventually rewarded in the closing moments when Amad capitalised on a rare opportunity, finding the breakthrough that sparked jubilant celebrations among players, coaches and supporters.

The victory sees Ivory Coast move level on three points with Germany at the top of Group E. Earlier in the day, the European giants delivered a commanding performance to defeat Curacao 7-1 in the group’s other fixture.

With the World Cup expanded from 32 to 48 teams, Africa has a record ten representatives at this year’s tournament. Ivory Coast’s success provides the continent with its first positive result after the opening round of matches.

Several African nations have already begun their campaigns, including South Africa, Morocco, Ivory Coast and Tunisia, while Ghana, Egypt, Algeria, DR Congo and Cabo Verde are still preparing to play their opening matches as they seek to make their mark on the global stage.

For Ivory Coast, the victory not only delivers three valuable points but also boosts confidence ahead of the challenges that lie ahead in Group E, with hopes high that the Elephants can mount a strong run in the competition.
