The President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Musa Kida, has applauded the prowess and success of Nigerian athletes following the news that D’Tigress captain Amy Okonkwo signed a developmental contract with the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream.

Kida praised the continued international recognition of Nigerian basketball talent, highlighting Okonkwo’s rapid rise and her significant contributions to both club and country.

The Atlanta Dream officially signed the Nigerian forward to a developmental contract to bolster their frontcourt as they prepare for the 2026 season.

Okonkwo recently attended training camp with the Dallas Wings in 2026, after previously featuring in eight games for them during the 2025 WNBA season.

In 2025, she became the first undrafted player since 2000 to average over 10 points while shooting 60% or better through her first two WNBA appearances.

As captain, she led Nigeria to back-to-back FIBA Women’s AfroBasket titles in 2023 and 2025.

She was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2023 and 2025 Women’s AfroBasket tournaments.

The NBBF has consistently praised the “Nigerian fighting spirit” displayed by D’Tigress, with Kida highlighting their dominance in Africa and their ability to compete on the global stage, including their historic performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
