Nottingham Forest delivered one of the Premier League’s most eye-catching results of the season, storming Stamford Bridge and dismantling Chelsea 3–1 in a performance that will live long in the memory of every Forest faithful.
Taiwo Awoniyi was the undisputed star of the show, scoring twice and running Chelsea’s backline ragged from the first whistle. The Nigerian striker wasted no time making his mark, rising brilliantly to meet Dilane Bakwa’s pinpoint cross and powering a header past Robert Sanchez inside just two minutes. Stamford Bridge was stunned into silence before the game had barely begun.
Forest’s dominance continued to grow, and the deadlock was never truly threatened. When Malo Gusto clumsily upended Awoniyi inside the penalty area in the 20th minute, Igor Jesus stepped up with ice-cold composure and buried the spot-kick to double the visitors’ advantage, sending Sanchez the wrong way in emphatic fashion.
Chelsea attempted to claw their way back before the break, earning a penalty of their own following a foul on Jesse Derry. But Matz Sels — magnificent throughout stood tall to deny Cole Palmer, preserving Forest’s commanding lead and sapping whatever momentum the Blues had hoped to build.
Any lingering hope of a Chelsea comeback was extinguished early in the second half. Morgan Gibbs-White slid a perfectly weighted cross into the box and Awoniyi was there once again, slotting home with clinical precision to seal a famous victory.
The 28-year-old has now contributed four goals and an assist across 14 league appearances this season numbers that tell only part of the story of a player growing in stature with every passing week. For Nottingham Forest, this result is more than just three points. It is a statement of intent.
