The D’ Tigress have successfully concluded their intensive training and exhibition tour in the United States.
The mission was designed to bridge the gap between continental dominance and global podium.
The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has commended D’ Tigress for their performance after playing 3 grade A quality matches . The Federation leadership noted that the essence of the exhibition games was not lost, despite the team losing the three games played.
The reigning African champions played against highly rated WNBA teams and bowed to the superior technical skills to Los Angeles Sparks, Minnesota Lynx, and Indiana Fever.
Irrespective of the results on the court, Ugo Udezue, a board member of the NBBF and chairman of the marketing committee of the federation, insisted that the exhibition international games in the United States has afforded the D’ Tigress the experience to be more formidable ahead of the FIBA Women’s World Cup in Germany in September this year.
“The just-concluded U.S. tour was exactly what D’Tigress needed at this stage of our journey. A high-level, high-pressure environment that tested our depth, exposed new talent, and reinforced our identity as a global team,” Ugo said.
“Of course, some may focus on results. We are focused on growth, cohesion, and long-term dominance. This tour has given us clarity, confidence, and a renewed belief in the direction we are heading,” he added.
Furthermore, he revealed that the D’ Tigress has learnt valuable lessons in the United States, which will be used to build more cohesion and compact teams that will be needed to compete favourably at the World Cup
“What this experience represents is the evolution of Nigerian basketball. We are building not just a team but a sustainable pipeline blending established leaders with a new generation of talent that will carry this programme forward for years to come.
“The exposure, the competition, and the lessons learned, positions D’Tigress, not just to compete at the World Cup, but to contend. The future is very bright, and more importantly, it is intentional.”
D’Tigress will open her quest for favourable outing at the World Cup against South Korea on 4th September, be on the basketball court the next day against Hungary, and then have a final showdown in the group ag
ainst France on 6th September.
