Coventry City have confirmed the signing of Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka on loan from Premier League side Brentford, strengthening their squad ahead of the promotion push.
The agreement includes an obligation to make the move permanent if the Sky Blues secure promotion to the Premier League at the end of the season.
Onyeka arrives at the Coventry Building Society Arena after spending last season on loan in the Bundesliga with FC Augsburg, where he featured prominently, making 31 league appearances and gaining valuable top-flight experience.
The 28-year-old is relishing the new challenge and has expressed his determination to make a strong impact at his new club.
“I’m very happy to be here,” Onyeka told Coventry City’s official website.
“I’m a strong midfielder, I’m a winner and I always want to fight for my teammates.
“My aim is to give 100 per cent, bring my experience and help the team get promoted to the Premier League and bring glory to the city again. I’m very excited to get going and I’m ready to give my all for Coventry.”
Onyeka joined Brentford in the summer of 2021 and went on to become a key figure at the Gtech Community Stadium, making 75 Premier League appearances and 87 outings across all competitions for the Bees.
He played an important role in establishing Brentford as a Premier League force and was instrumental in their ninth-place finish during the 2022-23 season, the club’s highest ever in the competition.
Coventry City will now be hoping Onyeka’s experience, energy and winning mentality can help drive their push for a return to England’s top flight.
