It was no holds barred at Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne where Sunshine Stars of Akure defeated Ikorodu City 4-3 in a seven goal spectacle.
In an exciting showpiece, the Owena Whales began the second stanza of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with new boy Liman Ahmadu putting the hosts up with a well-lobbed shot into the net, after just 16 minutes.
Promise Awosanmi increased Sunshine Stars’ tally four minutes later off Elmer Arunta’s rebound.
Emmanuel Ofori denied Ikorodu City with a beautiful save in the 25th minute before Sunshine Stars’ new signing Dabani Alao came from the bench less than a minute to put the ball away, with the 3rd, from Ogechuckwu Ogbu’s cross.
Ikorodu City reduced the deficit to 3-1 through hardworking Shola Adelani in the nick of half time.
Adelani inspired the visitors back into the game with his second goal on sixty-three minutes.
The goal hungry Alao completed his brace to restore the Akure side’s two-goal lead in the 74th minute.
In added time, Alade Solomon hit the target for Ikorodu City capping an exciting derby 4-3, in favour of Sunshine Stars.
With Nasarawa United, Abia Warriors and Niger Tornadoes also recording slim wins on Saturday, Sunshine Stars move to 12th on the log with 24 points from 20 games.
Head Coach of Sunshine Stars, Bobola Akinfolarin said the result portends good omen considering the number of goals recorded by his side.
Akinfolarin said his team would subsequently ensure that they concede lesser goals.
“It is not a bad result because in the first round we struggled to score goals despite creating enough chances. As you could see, we scored as many as four goals in one game yet it is still work in progress.
“We have seen our lapses, trust us to go back and work on them”, he said.
Sunshine Stars will next visit Yenagoa to tackle Bayelsa United in a match day 21 tie, on Wednesday.
