Following the appointment of Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, there have since been conversations about whether he would finally help the national team turn the corner. As the first non-Nigerian African to hold the position, he has large shoes to fill and heavy challenges to face.

Chelle has a track record working for Mali, including leading them to the last eight of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which has been one of his main strengths. This feat indicates he possesses the strategic savvy to be competitive at a high level. Nonetheless, with a win percentage of 45.27%, his general management has been met with skepticism due to his inconsistencies.

The other key ingredient has been his adaptation to Nigerian football. But many critics say a home-grown coach would have been a better option, particularly as they would have a more direct feel of the country’s football culture. On the other hand, Chelle’s fresh perspective may be just what the club needs to add new strategies to maximize the team’s performance.

His first major test will be in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers for 2026, which the Super Eagles so far have been struggling in, Chelle must muster a turnaround, start producing outcomes, and earn the trust of fans and stakeholders.

But ultimately, Chelle’s success will come down to his tactical mindset, squad management and support from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
