The Director of Technical Competition for the annual Igala Nations Cup and CAF-licensed manager, Abubakar Kamar Olachene, has described the recently concluded group stage of the 8th edition of the Igala Nations Cup as eventful and interesting. The group stage ended on Friday at the Federal Polytechnic Sports Complex in Idah, with 16 teams competing in this soccer fiesta.

Abubakar Kamar Olachene, who is also the proprietor of Kamar Football Academy, Idah, and a member of the Kogi State Football Association Board, expressed his satisfaction with the level of competition and sportsmanship displayed by all the participating teams. “So far, I am impressed with the outcome of the group stage and how the various teams conducted themselves. Hopefully, the quarter-finals will be even more exciting,” he said.

He noted the significant improvements and innovations in this year’s edition, crediting the success to the collective efforts of partners like the Igala Bassa Development Initiative (IBDI), Iduh Integrated Nigeria Limited, Muri Foundation, DVAA Foundation, and many others who contributed to the smooth organization and execution of the tournament.

“The participating teams and their supporters have behaved commendably since the competition began, and we hope this continues until the final,” he added.

Some notable talents were discovered during the group stage, aligning with the Igala Nations Cup’s mission to identify, nurture, and provide opportunities for talented players to showcase their abilities on a larger platform. “The annual competition has helped discover talents, many of whom have excelled at higher levels, especially abroad. We will continue this effort. Some of the new talents will be invited to play for Igala United FC in the Nationwide League One Division Two, where they can hone their skills and display their talent on bigger stages,” Olachene said.

Following the conclusion of the group stage on Friday, 30th August 2024, the top eight teams from the four groups will enjoy a week of rest before the quarter-finals, scheduled for the 8th and 9th of September 2024.
