Equatorial Guinean striker Emilio Nsue, who clinched the title of top goalscorer at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, has announced his retirement from international football.

The decision comes in the wake of serious corruption accusations made against his country’s Football Association.

The prolific striker scored five goals during AFCON in the Ivory Coast, securing the tournament’s Golden Boot. His retirement from the Equatorial Guinea national team follows his recent suspension by the football federation of his country. The news was confirmed by Teodora Nguema, the vice-president of Equatorial Guinea, on Tuesday night.

Nguema stated, “After discussions, captain Emilio Nsue López has declared his retirement from the national team. I acknowledge his contributions over the 12 years he has represented the Nzalang Nacional and wish him success in his future endeavours.”

Nsue gained widespread recognition during his impressive performance in the Ivory Coast, surprising many due to his relatively unknown status prior to the tournament, where he competes in the Spanish third division with Intercity.

Reports indicate that last week, the striker made shocking revelations against the Equatorial Guinea Football Association, alleging that the organization had misappropriated bonuses and fees amounting to €1 million (R20 million) following the team’s AFCON campaign.
