Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has strongly criticised the officiating following the Pharaohs’ dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, claiming his side were denied a fair opportunity to progress.

The North Africans looked destined to produce one of the biggest shocks of the tournament after racing into a two-goal lead against the defending champions before Argentina mounted a remarkable comeback to snatch victory and secure a place in the quarter-finals.

The thrilling encounter was overshadowed by several contentious refereeing decisions that sparked frustration among the Egyptian players and coaching staff.

Among the most debated incidents was a VAR intervention that ruled out a goal from Mostafa Mohamed, popularly known as Zico, early in the second half. The decision, along with several other calls during the match, prompted repeated protests from the Egyptian bench.

Speaking after the final whistle, an emotional Hossam Hassan expressed his disappointment and questioned the officiating throughout the contest.

«”I will say what’s on my mind regardless of the consequence; this was clearly a rigged match, and the whole world saw it,” Hassan said after the match.»

The former Egypt international went further by suggesting the outcome of the encounter had been predetermined.

«”And I want to say one more thing, if they want them [Argentina] to win so bad, why call everyone to come and participate?”»

Hassan’s comments are likely to generate widespread debate following one of the tournament’s most dramatic knockout fixtures.

Egypt forward Mostafa Mohamed also voiced his frustration after the match, claiming that questionable officiating decisions played a significant role in the Pharaohs’ painful elimination.

Despite the controversial ending, Egypt can reflect on an impressive World Cup campaign that included a historic first victory on football’s biggest stage and their maiden knockout-stage triumph before eventually bowing out against the reigning world champions.

Argentina, meanwhile, advance to the quarter-finals, where they will continue their defence of the FIFA World Cup title.
