Harry Kane once again proved why he remains England’s talisman, scoring twice to lead the Three Lions to a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over DR Congo in their Round of 32 clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The knockout encounter at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium tested England’s resilience as a determined DR Congo side threatened to produce one of the tournament’s biggest upsets. However, Kane’s late heroics ensured Gareth Southgate’s men booked their place in the Round of 16, where they will meet Mexico.
DR Congo made the perfect start and stunned the favourites inside the opening 10 minutes.
In the seventh minute, Brian Cipenga capitalised on a dangerous delivery into the penalty area before firing a composed low finish into the bottom-left corner, giving the Leopards a dream 1-0 lead and sending their supporters into celebration.
The early setback sparked England into life as they immediately took control of possession and began to pile pressure on the Congolese defence.
Despite England’s dominance, goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau produced an outstanding display to keep his side in front.
The DR Congo shot-stopper denied Jude Bellingham with a superb save after the midfielder connected with a dangerous cross, before Marcus Rashford saw his first-time effort blocked inside a crowded penalty area.
England continued to push for an equaliser, with Harry Kane also coming close in first-half stoppage time. The striker looked certain to score from close range, but Mpasi-Nzau reacted brilliantly to preserve his team’s advantage heading into the closing moments of the half.
DR Congo nearly doubled their lead just before the interval when Yoane Wissa burst into the penalty area and unleashed a powerful strike that crashed against the post, leaving England relieved to trail by only one goal at halftime.
England returned after the break with greater intensity, dominating possession and forcing DR Congo deeper into their own half as they searched relentlessly for a breakthrough.
Their persistence was finally rewarded in the 75th minute.
A perfectly delivered cross found Harry Kane inside the penalty area, and the England captain rose above his marker to power a clinical header beyond Mpasi-Nzau and restore parity at 1-1.
The equaliser shifted momentum firmly in England’s favour as DR Congo began to tire under relentless pressure.
With just four minutes remaining, Kane completed the turnaround.
In the 86th minute, the Bayern Munich striker timed his run to perfection before latching onto a precise through ball. Showing remarkable composure, he calmly lifted his finish into the top-right corner to score his second goal of the evening and send England into the lead for the first time.
DR Congo fought bravely until the final whistle but could not find another response, as England held on to complete an impressive comeback and secure their place in the Round of 16.
Although the result ended DR Congo’s World Cup journey, the African side earned widespread praise for a spirited performance, with goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau emerging as one of the standout performers despite the defeat.
For England, the victory keeps their hopes of lifting a second FIFA World Cup title alive. Inspired by Harry Kane’s leadership and clinical finishing, the Three Lions now turn their attention to a mouthwatering Round of 16 showdown against hosts Mexico, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
