Morocco took a significant step towards the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Scotland in their second Group C fixture on Friday night.
An early goal from Ismael Saibari proved enough to separate the two sides in a fiercely contested encounter that featured several VAR reviews, penalty appeals, and a determined Scottish fightback.
The Atlas Lions could not have wished for a better start as they found the breakthrough just two minutes into the contest.
Brahim Díaz produced a perfectly timed through ball that sliced open the Scottish defence, allowing Saibari to race clear into the penalty area. The PSV Eindhoven midfielder kept his composure and rifled an unstoppable effort into the roof of the net, giving Morocco an early advantage and sending their supporters into celebration.
The goal immediately put Scotland on the back foot and handed Morocco the platform they needed to control large portions of the first half.
Despite enjoying the better chances, Morocco were unable to extend their lead before the interval. Their best opportunity arrived in the 36th minute when Bilal El Khannouss found space inside the box following a clever attacking move. However, with the goal at his mercy, the midfielder blazed his effort over the crossbar, leaving Scotland with renewed hope.
The match then became increasingly tense as a series of contentious decisions dominated proceedings.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Scotland appealed strongly for a penalty after a challenge inside the Moroccan penalty area. The referee halted play and consulted VAR but ultimately ruled that no foul had been committed, much to the frustration of the Scottish players and coaching staff.
The controversy continued shortly after the restart. Scotland launched another attack and once again appealed for a penalty following a challenge inside the area. After reviewing the incident, the referee maintained his original decision and waved play on.
As the clock ticked down, Scotland threw more players forward in search of an equaliser. Their pressure intensified in the closing stages, and another penalty appeal arrived in the 82nd minute following a scramble inside the Moroccan box. Yet again, the referee was unmoved despite furious protests from the Scottish side.
Morocco remained disciplined defensively and continued to threaten on the counterattack. In the third minute of stoppage time, substitute Chemsdine Talbi nearly put the result beyond doubt when he met a loose ball on the edge of the area, only to send his effort narrowly over the crossbar.
Fortunately for the North Africans, the missed chance did not prove costly as they successfully saw out the remaining minutes to secure all three points.
The victory lifts Morocco to the top of Group C, at least temporarily, ahead of Brazil’s second group match against Haiti. More importantly, the result puts the Atlas Lions in a commanding position in the race for qualification and leaves them on the verge of securing a place in the Round of 32.
For Scotland, the defeat leaves their World Cup hopes hanging in the balance. Despite a spirited performance and several controversial moments, they were unable to find a way past a resilient Moroccan defence and now face a must-win situation in their remaining group fixtures.
