Morocco began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on an impressive note, holding five-time world champions Brazil to a hard-fought 1-1 draw in an entertaining Group C encounter on Saturday night.

The Atlas Lions produced a disciplined and energetic performance against one of the tournament favourites, matching Brazil throughout a contest filled with quality chances and moments of brilliance.

Despite Morocco’s positive start, Brazil carved out the first clear opportunity of the match in the 14th minute. Igor Thiago reacted quickly to a floated delivery near the six-yard box but failed to direct his header on target, sending the effort wide of the right post.

Morocco capitalised on their bright opening and took the lead in spectacular fashion in the 21st minute. Ismael Saibari showcased remarkable awareness and technique after receiving a pass from Brahim Díaz on the edge of the penalty area. Spotting Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker off his line, Saibari calmly lifted the ball over him and into the back of the net to give Morocco a deserved advantage.

The goal stunned Brazil, but the South Americans responded with the quality expected of a team boasting some of the world’s finest attacking talents.

Just 11 minutes later, Vinicius Junior produced a moment of magic to restore parity. The Real Madrid forward embarked on a dazzling run through the Moroccan defence before unleashing a powerful strike from inside the area that flew beyond Yassine Bono and into the top-right corner.

With the scores level at 1-1, the match continued at a frantic pace. Brazil nearly completed the turnaround in first-half stoppage time when Lucas Paquetá found himself in space only a few yards from goal. However, Bono reacted brilliantly to deny the midfielder with a superb reflex save, ensuring Morocco went into the interval level.

Brazil resumed the second half on the front foot and came close again in the 58th minute. A perfectly weighted through ball split the Moroccan defence and found Igor Thiago in a promising position, but Bono once more came to his country’s rescue, diving acrobatically to push the striker’s effort away from goal.

Both managers introduced fresh legs as the match wore on, with each side searching for a decisive breakthrough. Morocco remained organised defensively while continuing to threaten on the counterattack, whereas Brazil enjoyed spells of possession but struggled to break down the resilient African side.

Despite several late opportunities and relentless effort from both teams, neither side could find a winning goal before the final whistle.

The draw leaves Group C finely balanced, with both nations collecting a valuable point from their opening fixture. Morocco will now turn their attention to a crucial clash against Scotland on June 19, while Brazil face Haiti in their second group-stage encounter as they continue their quest for a sixth World Cup title.

For Morocco, the result represents another statement on the world stage and reinforces their reputation as one of international football’s most difficult teams to beat.
