Mexico kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in impressive fashion on Thursday night, securing a deserved 2-0 victory over South Africa in the opening match of the tournament.

Backed by a passionate home crowd, the hosts started brightly and nearly opened the scoring within five minutes. A dangerous corner kick found Raul Jimenez, whose first-time effort towards the bottom corner was brilliantly denied by South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who produced an outstanding diving save to keep his side level.

Mexico continued to pile on the pressure and were rewarded in the ninth minute. Julian Quinones capitalized on a costly defensive error on the edge of the penalty area before calmly firing past Williams to hand the hosts an early lead.

The Mexican attack remained a constant threat throughout the first half, with both Jimenez and Quinones creating several opportunities as South Africa struggled to contain the hosts’ relentless forward play.

South Africa’s task became even more difficult shortly after the restart when Yaya Sithole received a straight red card in the 49th minute for a dangerous challenge, reducing the visitors to ten men for the remainder of the contest.

Mexico took full advantage of their numerical superiority and doubled their lead in the 67th minute. Roberto Alvarado delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, and Raul Jimenez rose highest to guide a powerful header into the bottom corner, sending the home supporters into celebration.

The match became increasingly heated as tensions flared in the closing stages. South Africa were reduced to nine men in the 84th minute after VAR intervention resulted in Themba Zwane being shown a red card by the referee.

There was still time for more drama during seven minutes of added time, as Mexico defender Cesar Montes was also sent off following a reckless challenge on an opponent.

Despite the late dismissal, Mexico comfortably managed the closing moments to secure all three points, making a perfect start to their World Cup journey while delighting their fans on opening night.

The victory places Mexico in a strong early position in the tournament, while South Africa will be looking to regroup quickly ahead of their next group-stage fixture.
