Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has officially completed his international switch from England to Nigeria after receiving approval from FIFA.
The 24-year-old, who was born in London to Nigerian parents, previously featured for England at youth level but has now pledged his international future to the three-time African champions. FIFA’s clearance, granted on Monday, makes Okonkwo immediately eligible to represent the Nigeria national football team at senior level.
This development comes at a crucial time for the Super Eagles, who are preparing to defend their title at the upcoming Unity Cup in May. The invitational tournament will feature strong opposition, including Iran national football team and Jamaica national football team.
Okonkwo could be handed an early opportunity to impress, as head coach Éric Chelle is expected to give fringe players a chance to stake their claim for a regular spot in the squad.
Beyond the Unity Cup, Nigeria also has high-profile international friendlies lined up in June against Poland national football team and Portugal national football team, fixtures that could further provide Okonkwo with valuable exposure on the international stage.
Okonkwo began his professional career at Arsenal F.C., gaining experience through loan spells at Crewe Alexandra F.C., SK Sturm Graz, and Wrexham A.F.C.. His performances during his loan stint at Wrexham earned him a permanent move in 2024, where he has since developed into one of the standout goalkeepers in the Sky Bet Championship.
With his international future now settled, Okonkwo’s inclusion could add fresh competition and depth to Nigeria’s goalkeeping department as the team looks ahead to a busy and competitive calendar.
