The Federal Government of Nigeria has fulfilled its pledge to reward members of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket championship.
Nigeria’s basketball heroines, led by head coach Rena Wakama, delivered a remarkable performance to claim the continental title after defeating Mali women’s national basketball team 78–64 in the final played in August 2025.
In recognition of their outstanding achievement, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, approved generous rewards for the players and the technical crew shortly after their victory. Each player was awarded a cash reward equivalent to $100,000, while the head coach and every member of the technical team received the naira equivalent of $50,000.
Beyond the financial rewards, the President also honoured the team with national recognition by conferring on them the prestigious Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) title. In addition, he approved the allocation of a residential flat for each player, the coach, and members of the technical crew as part of the government’s commitment to celebrating excellence in Nigerian sports.
The official presentation of the National Honours and housing documents took place on Monday in Lyon, France, where the team is currently participating in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournament.
The documents were handed over to the players and officials by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, alongside the Director-General of the Commission, Bukola Olopade.
The presentation ceremony served as a symbolic moment of appreciation from the Federal Government, acknowledging the team’s dedication and their continued role in elevating Nigeria’s profile in global basketball.
D’Tigress remain Africa’s dominant women’s basketball side and are currently focused on securing qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup as they compete against some of the world’s best teams in Lyon.
Their AfroBasket triumph and the subsequent recognition from the Federal Government underscore Nigeria’s commitment to rewarding sporting excellence and inspiring the next generation of athletes across the country.
