Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, the D’Tigress, officially tip off their quest for global dominance today, March 11, 2026, as they face Colombia in the opening match of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament.
The match, scheduled for 14:00 (GMT+1) at the Astroballe arena in Villeurbanne, marks the first of five high-stakes encounters for the reigning African champions. While Nigeria has already secured an automatic berth for the 2026 World Cup in Berlin by virtue of their 2025 AfroBasket title, Head Coach Rena Wakama is utilizing this tournament as a critical proving ground to sharpen the team’s tactical edge against world-class opposition.

Stationed in Tournament D, Nigeria faces a grueling round-robin schedule against a diverse field of contenders. Following today’s clash with Colombia, the D’Tigress will maintain a high tempo with back-to-back games.
Nigeria currently sits at 8th in the FIBA World Rankings, a sign of their rising status after a historic quarter-final run in previous international windows. Their opponents today, Colombia, are ranked 19th but enter the game with significant momentum after a strong showing in the AmeriCup.
The top teams from these global qualifiers will join the 16-nation field for the flagship event in Germany this September.
