Coach Banjo Adepoju has expressed profound appreciation to the Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and the State Sports Commissioner for their unwavering support after guiding Ondo State’s male football team to the final of the 2026 Niger Delta Games.

Ondo State booked their place in the final with a commanding 3-0 victory over Bayelsa State in the semi-final, a performance widely described as a tactical masterclass from Adepoju and his coaching crew.

Speaking after the emphatic triumph, the experienced tactician described the performance as a reflection of discipline, preparation, unity, and strong institutional backing.

“This victory is not just about today; it is about the hard work these boys have put in from day one,” Adepoju said.

“We respected Bayelsa, but we believed in our structure, our strategy, and our strength. The players executed the game plan perfectly.”

He also used the opportunity to appreciate Governor Aiyedatiwa and the Ondo State Sports Commissioner for creating an enabling environment for the team to thrive.

“I want to sincerely thank His Excellency, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and the Honourable Commissioner for Sports for their consistent support and encouragement,” Adepoju added.

“Their belief in this team, timely support, and commitment to sports development in Ondo State have motivated the players immensely. We are determined to repay that trust with the trophy.”

Ondo State took control of the encounter early, with Idowu Omosebi opening the scoring to set the tone for the dominant performance.

Kehinde Oluwole doubled the advantage with a well-taken finish, while Olowogbeluega Oluwaseyifunmi sealed the victory with a third goal to confirm Ondo’s passage into the final.

Under Adepoju’s guidance, Ondo State remain unbeaten in the tournament.

The team secured a 1-1 draw against host state Edo, defeated Rivers State 2-0, and convincingly dispatched Bayelsa State 3-0 in the semi-final.

“We qualified for this final without losing a match, and that tells you about the mentality of this team,” Adepoju said.

“From the draw against Edo to the wins over Rivers and Bayelsa, the boys have shown character. But the job is not finished. We are focused on lifting the trophy.”

A CAF License C coach, Adepoju has brought his wealth of experience to bear on the team’s campaign. He previously served as assistant coach of Sunshine Stars F.C., where he played a key role in the club’s qualification for the NPFL Super Six.

He also handled the team in an interim capacity before moving on to become head coach of Rising Stars, Akure City FC, and Adamimigo FC.

Armed with an Advanced Certificate in Coaching, a Diploma in Sports Science, and a Diploma in Sports Psychology, Adepoju’s academic and professional background has been instrumental in shaping a disciplined and tactically balanced Ondo side.

“Experience matters in tournaments like this. I have been privileged to work at different levels, and all those experiences prepared me for this moment,” he said.

“I believe in developing players mentally and physically, and you can see the result on the pitch.”

The young and multi-talented coach emphasized that unity within the squad has been central to their success.

“This is a team built on trust. Every player understands his role. We attack together and defend together. That unity is why we are in the final today.”

With the final now in sight, Coach Banjo Adepoju remains calm but determined, insisting that Ondo State must maintain the same hunger and discipline that has carried them this far in the 2026 Niger Delta Games.

“Our focus is clear. We respect whoever we meet in the final, but we believe in ourselves. By God’s grace, we will give Ondo State something to celebrate.”
