The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a hefty $615,000 fine on the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) following multiple acts of misconduct involving players, technical staff, and supporters during the AFCON 2025 final.
The disciplinary action stems from a series of incidents that occurred in the highly charged final against Morocco, played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Tensions reached a boiling point when Senegal’s players walked off the pitch for approximately 17 minutes in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco.
Order was eventually restored after captain Sadio Mané intervened, convincing his teammates to return to the field so the match could continue.
Despite the disruption, the Teranga Lions regrouped and went on to claim the continental crown after extra time.
Midfielder Pape Gueye emerged as the hero of the night, scoring a decisive solo goal to secure victory for Senegal after Brahim Díaz had earlier missed a crucial penalty.
Following a thorough review of the events, CAF’s Disciplinary Committee found the Senegal FA culpable for a combination of supporter-related incidents and unsporting conduct by the team and its officials.
According to CAF’s ruling, the breakdown of the fine is as follows:
$300,000 for the improper conduct of Senegalese supporters, which brought the game into disrepute.
$300,000 for the unsporting behaviour of players and technical staff, in violation of CAF’s principles of fair play, loyalty, and integrity.
$15,000 for team misconduct after five Senegalese players received cautions during the final.
In a statement, CAF said:
“To fine the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), USD 300,000 for the improper conduct of its supporters, which brought the game into disrepute in violation of the CAF Disciplinary Code principles of fair play and integrity.”
CAF further added:
“To fine the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), USD 300,000 for the unsporting conduct of their players and technical staff in violation of the CAF Disciplinary Code principles of fair play, loyalty and integrity.
The unsporting conduct of their players and the technical staff also brought the game into disrepute.”
“To fine the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), USD 15,000 for the misconduct of its National Team, due to five (5) of its players having received cautions.”
In the wake of the sanctions, the Senegal FA is expected to consider an appeal against CAF’s ruling in the coming days.
