‎The Federal Government of Nigeria has fulfilled the housing and land pledges made to the Super Eagles squad that finished as runners-up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

‎In addition to the housing rewards, members of the silver-medal-winning team were also conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in recognition of their outstanding performance at the tournament.

‎Players who benefited from the gesture include Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Paul Onuachu, Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi. Others are Stanley Nwabali, Zaidu Sanusi, Moses Simon, Frank Onyeka, Francis Uzoho, Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi.

‎The presentation of the house and land documents, alongside certificates of the national honour, took place at the team’s camp in Morocco.

‎Present at the event were the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC), as well as other top government representatives.

‎President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had made the pledge in February 2024 when he hosted the Super Eagles players and officials following their return from the AFCON 2023 finals in Côte d’Ivoire.

‎ At the reception, the President promised houses, land allocations and national honours in appreciation of the team’s efforts.

‎Speaking during the presentation, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau recalled the President’s commitment, stating that the gesture was deliberately fulfilled before the commencement of another AFCON campaign.

‎“The President graciously promised us houses in Abuja and Lagos, land in Abuja and national honours,” Gusau said. “He believes we cannot begin another AFCON campaign without first fulfilling that promise.”

‎Also speaking at the event, NSC Chairman Dikko emphasized the government’s resolve to honour its commitments promptly.

‎“It was the decision of the government that whatever was promised must be delivered before the first match of this AFCON,” he said. “This is the first time such a promise has been fulfilled so quickly. In the past, similar pledges took nearly 20 years to materialize.”

‎Dikko added that the development signals a new direction in governance, stressing that the current administration is committed to delivering on its promises.

‎The timely fulfillment of the rewards has been widely praised as a significant morale boost for the Super Eagles as they embark on another Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
