‎The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will transition to a four-year cycle beginning with the 2028 tournament, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced.

‎CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirmed the change on Saturday, marking a major shift in the scheduling of Africa’s premier national team competition.

‎Since 1968, AFCON has traditionally been held every two years, with only a brief exception between the 2012 and 2013 editions.

‎Under the new arrangement, following the 2027 tournament in East Africa and the 2028 edition, future AFCON events will take place every four years.

‎The move is intended to better align African football with the global international match calendar.

‎“We have the most exciting new structure for African football,” Motsepe said. “I do what is in the interests of Africa.

‎The global calendar has to be significantly more synchronised and harmonised.”

‎This decision aims to give teams more preparation time and enhance the overall competitiveness of African football on the world stage
