The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will transition to a four-year cycle beginning with the 2028 tournament, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirmed the change on Saturday, marking a major shift in the scheduling of Africa’s premier national team competition.
Since 1968, AFCON has traditionally been held every two years, with only a brief exception between the 2012 and 2013 editions.
Under the new arrangement, following the 2027 tournament in East Africa and the 2028 edition, future AFCON events will take place every four years.
The move is intended to better align African football with the global international match calendar.
“We have the most exciting new structure for African football,” Motsepe said. “I do what is in the interests of Africa.
The global calendar has to be significantly more synchronised and harmonised.”
This decision aims to give teams more preparation time and enhance the overall competitiveness of African football on the world stage
